Dogs and the commute: what riders can learn
A commuter who rides past a dog walker every morning at 7:40 learns to read the animal before the leash. The useful question is not whether a dog is friendly, but what it was bred to do, and how that breeding is checked. What are working dog standards, in plain terms?
Working dog standards are the written rules a breed club and its national registry use to decide which dogs are eligible for registration, breeding, and titles. They cover three things: health requirements, breeding conditions, and the tests a dog must pass to be recognised as suitable for work. The rules are not identical across countries. The FCI, the AKC, and the British Kennel Club each set their own conditions, and a dog that qualifies in one system may not qualify in another. For a rider, the practical effect is simple: two dogs of the same breed, on the same street, can come from lines selected for very different jobs.
How do registries differ on health and breeding?
The FCI, based in Belgium and representing national kennel clubs across Europe and much of the world, requires health screening before breeding for several working breeds. Hip and elbow scores, eye examinations, and in some cases DNA tests are conditions of registration for litters. The AKC, in the United States, operates a more decentralised system: breed clubs set their own health recommendations, and the registry records results but does not always make them a condition of breeding. The British Kennel Club sits between the two, with its own Assured Breeder scheme and a separate approach to some breed-specific conditions.
Breeding conditions also differ on litter control. Some systems use a Körung, a breed survey in which a judge assesses the dog's temperament, structure, and working ability before it is approved for breeding. Others rely on the owner and the breed club to make that call. The result is that a puppy's paperwork tells you which system produced it, and that system tells you how much was checked.
Which breeds show the widest gap between work and show lines?
The German Shepherd is the clearest case. In Germany, the breed is split between lines bred for Schutzhund, now called IGP, and lines bred for conformation shows. The working lines are selected for drive, endurance, and nerve; the show lines for a sloping back and a specific gait. The two are registered in the same breed but rarely crossed. The Rottweiler shows a similar split, with working lines used for protection and carting and show lines selected for size and head type. The Doberman has followed the same path, and the Belgian Malinois, the Dutch Shepherd, and the Tervuren are all bred in working and sport lines that differ in build and temperament.
The Border Collie is a separate case. It is bred almost entirely for herding ability, and the split is between dogs that work sheep on a farm and dogs that compete in agility or obedience. The Giant Schnauzer, the Swiss Bouviers, and the Newfoundland are working breeds where the show ring has moved the breed further from its original job, and the gap is visible in weight, coat, and stamina.
What do the selection tests actually measure?
The tests are the part most riders never see, and they are the part that decides what a breed becomes. Schutzhund, now IGP, has three phases: tracking, obedience, and protection. The tracking phase tests the dog's nose and its ability to work a scent line over time. The obedience phase tests control under distraction. The protection phase tests the dog's response to a threat, and, just as importantly, its ability to switch off when the threat ends. The French Ring and Mondio Ring are similar in structure but differ in the details of the exercises and in how the judge reads them.
A judge at these trials is looking at temperament and functional construction together. A dog that is too heavy to jump, or too nervous to hold a position, loses points regardless of its pedigree. The titles, IPO, IGP, Ring, and Mondio, are therefore a record of what the dog has done, not what it looks like. Buyers who read those titles are reading a performance history.
Why does genetic diversity matter in closed registries?
A closed registry is one that does not accept new blood from outside the breed. Most working breeds are closed, which means the gene pool is fixed and shrinks over time. Breeders manage this with coefficient of inbreeding calculations, line breeding, and, in some cases, outcrossing programmes approved by the club. The FCI and some national clubs publish guidance on this; others leave it to the breeder. The practical consequence is that two dogs of the same breed can have very different levels of genetic diversity, and that difference shows up in health and in working lifespan.
What should a rider take from all this?
A commuter does not need to know the difference between an IPO title and a Körung to ride safely past a dog. But the information is useful in three ways. First, it explains why a dog on a short lead may be working, not just walking: a dog in training for a tracking or protection title is often on a specific routine. Second, it explains why breed size and build vary so much between individuals of the same breed. Third, it gives the rider a way to read a dog's behaviour without guessing. A dog that holds a position and watches is doing what it was selected to do; a dog that pulls and barks is doing something else.
The same logic applies to the rider. A commuter who rides the same route every day is running a small selection test of their own: which gear, which line, which timing works. The difference is that the rider can change the programme. The dog cannot.
